A new function of the Language Grid Toolbox has been released.

-Discussion

This function can be used for discussions on a bulletin board system (BBS) about uploaded images and maps. The messages of the BBS and the uploaded contents are displayed on the same window. Users can place a pointer on the uploaded contents to indicate the exact part of the content that they are talking about. This function is used for multilingual discussion at research meetings. For example, when students share their slides for presentations and have discussions using a pointer on a graph in the slide. (See the screen shot above.)
The Graduate School of Informatics in Kyoto University launched a website called “Global 30 Community Site” using the above function. The site is expected to support exchange students.

Japanese Language Input System with Online Translation Function

At Ichimura Laboratory at the School of Computer Science in Tokyo University of Technology, we have a research group of Japanese language input system (IME) and have been using the Language Grid since June 2009.
We developed the system of Japanese language input system with real-time translation function. This system uses the services on the Language Grid. The services support translation with the back-translation and synonym replacement functions, in addition to the normal function of displaying the translation result. The system is compatible with the Japanese input systems including MS-IME, ATOK, and Google Japanese Input. With the exchange students in our lab, we could use a chat system to have conversations with the Chinese speakers.
During our research, we used the Language Grid's services for translation. We will soon present the results at a research conference on the Language Grid.
We hope to develop the system further by using language resources other than translators.
