How to Use the Translator Service

1. How to use the Translator Service

The Translator Service allows you to translate a sentence into multiple languages using multiple translators. Let's look at what needs to be clicked, selected, and typed to use the Translator Service. Please follow the numbered descriptions in Figure 1.

Figure 1. Overall flow of operations for using the Translator Service.

1. On your screen you will see two title bars, Translate and Select Translator. First go to the Select Translator panel at the bottom and choose a translator or several translators you wish to use by clicking on the green translator button. The translator button will turn red when clicked to indicate that it has been selected. Clicking on the red button will unselect the dictionary (the button will return to green).

Placing your cursor on the translator button will prompt an information box to appear. The box displays information about the dictionary such as its name, supported language pairs and URL. If you are unsure which translator to use, place your cursor over the translator button to obtain information regarding the translator.

You can select all translators by checking the "Select All" box. Unchecking the "Select All" box will unselect all translators.

2. Once the desired translator or translators are selected, move up to the Translate panel and inside the text field, type in the sentence or sentences you wish to translate.

3. After typing in the sentence, move down to select the source language or the language of the typed sentence by selecting a language code from the "From" pull-down menu.

4. Selecting the source language will automatically display possible target languages. Note that the target language depends on the supported language of the selected translator. If a translator handles multiple languages, multiple target languages will be displayed. When multiple target languages are displayed, you can select the desired target language(s) by checking the corresponding language code box.

5. After the target languages are selected, you are ready to translate. Click the "Translate" button to start the translation.

2. How to interpret the Translator results

Multilingual translation results using two different translators (top and bottom red boxes) are shown below. The top red box's translations are listed in six languages (Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, German, Japanese, French) while the bottom red box's translation is given in one language (Japanese). Notice that the two translators both handle Japanese translation, but the translation ouputs are different.

3. The advantages of the Translator Service and how to best utilize it

The Translator Service allows you to select multiple translators and translate a sentence or sentences into multiple languages. Not only can you save time by translating a sentence into multiple languages using multiple translators, but you can also compare the translation results among different translators. Compared to professional human translations, machine translation is not yet perfect, and the quality of machine translation varies among different machine translators. That is why it is useful (and almost essential) to compare machine translation results to select the most suitable translation when using machine translation. Some machine translators are good at translating certain languages while others are better at translating certain types of sentences. By using the Translator Service, you can easily compare the translation results of various machine translators.
