New Translation Services with Dictionaries

NICT has launched two types of new translation services that can be combined with bilingual dictionaries. In Language Grid, they will appear as
"TranslationCombinedWithBilingualDictionary" and "TranslationCombinedWithBilingualDictionaryWithLongestMatchSearch."
Translations combined with bilingual dictionary: This translation service is realized when the translation service provides ordinary search functions such as exact searches, partial match searches, prefix searches, or suffix searches.

Translation combined with bilingual dictionary with longest match search: This translation service is realized when the translation service provides longest match searches. This service is faster than the above service because of the search function.

Thus, students can learn services computing with the help of the language services provided by the participants of the Language Grid.

SIG on Grid Business
Language Grid has been under development at the NICT. In December 2007, Kyoto University began Language Grid operations for nonprofit use. Thirty user groups joined at the time of the launch, and the Grid became has since become extremely active with the number of groups increasing to fifty within six months. However, the current operations are limited to nonprofit uses and cannot be applied for research and development or business purposes by companies. The goal of this SIG is to determine and solve the technical and organizational issues with Language Grid in order to promote its business use.

Open Laboratory at Yoshino Lab

Using information technology, Yoshino Laboratory (Department of Design and Information Sciences, Faculty of Systems Engineering, Wakayama University) conducts R&D on "communication designs." To support communication by breaking all language barriers, we develop systems using Language Grid. Currently, one-third of the members of our laboratory are working on multilingual communication systems for various fields, such as communication support systems for hospitals, meetings, and 3-D virtual world. The various kinds of language resources provided by Language Grid greatly facilitated our R&D activities pertaining to multilingual communication. Our participation in the project has also given us many opportunities to listen to a wide variety of viewpoints. It made us realize even more strongly the necessity of research, and it lent greater significance to our own research.
