IWIC2009 Report
IWIC2009 (The International Workshop on Intercultural Collaboration) was held at Stanford University on February 21 and 22, 2009. The participants included 99 people from 17 countries whose research backgrounds varied from natural language processing, to CSCW, to business. They engaged in active discussions.
Some of the members working with the Language Grid Project also participated. Mai Miyabe (Yoshino Lab, Wakayama Univ), Heeryon Cho (Ishida & Matsubara Lab, Kyoto Univ), and Toshiyuki Takasaki (Kyoto Univ/NPO Pangaea) made oral presentations. In addition, seven poster presentations concerning Language Grid were given: Satoshi Sakai (Ishida & Matusbara Lab, Kyoto Univ), Prof. Chigusa Kita (Kansai Univ), Yoshimasa Ikeda, Masafumi Matsuda (Kitamura Lab Kwansei Gakuin Univ), Yumiko Mori (NPO Pangaea), Yoshie Naya (JEARN), and Prof. Takashi Yoshino (Wakayama Univ). Also, two demonstrations were given: Language Grid Playground (Kyoto University) and Language Grid Service Manager (NICT). Ms. Miyabe was nominated for the best paper award and Mr. Sakai was nominated for the best poster award.
The participants discussed the future direction of this workshop in the form of a town meeting. The plan for upcoming workshops was determined as follows: the third one will be held in Copenhagen, Denmark in summer 2010 and the forth in Abu Dhabi, UAE in winter 2012.
Language Grid Users: Miyao & Yamaki Laboratory in Nagoya University
Miyao & Yamaki Laboratory at Nagoya University has three professors who belong to the Information Technology Center. We supervise the students of the Department of Information Engineering in the School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Information Science as professors of the Collaborative Laboratory.
We joined Language Grid after we attended the special lecture that Prof. Ishida held at our university. We discussed the possibility of connecting Aichi Prefecture's Multilingual Disaster Information System to Language Grid with Prof. Ishida. This system was developed by Prof. Miyao. In the first semester of 2008, our lab and Ishida & Matsubara Lab conducted a collaborative experiment to connect multilingual texts to Language Grid. Based on that experience, our lab is now carrying out research on the methods of connecting language resources using metadata. Four of the eight students in our lab are conducting research on Language Grid. This academic year, one Master's thesis and two graduation theses of this theme were submitted by our students.
Subsequent to the completion of this article, we will make a presentation at the research conference on the Language Grid of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers, and at the national convention of the Information Processing Society of Japan. Since we do not yet have a research theme for application development on Language Grid, we have not had access to the core of Language Grid very often. However, beginning with these presentations, we hope to have more opportunities to interact and collaborate with other researchers. From the aspect of language resources, we are developing a multilingual system to provide tourist information and we are hoping to connect this to Language Grid in the future.
(Update 2010/6/23)Currently, Miyao & Yamaki Laboratory has been changed into Takakura & Yamaki Laboratory.
